The Tasmanian Amateur Football League premiership cup was rediscovered during the school's latest round of renovations and has spent the last few months changing hands throughout the faculty.

"In one of our many moves over the last few years, I came across it in our trophy catalogue - it's been on quite a journey," college archivist Liz Woodworth said.

After a period of confusion over who should claim the trophy, its rightful place has now been found in the hands of the St Patrick's Old-Collegian Football Club, who won the cup three times and therefore holds the distinct honour of returning it to their clubhouse.

Saints president Ian McCallum had initially thought the cup dated to 1935 but discovered upon arriving at the school that it dates back to 1931, a year of particular note for fans.

"That means it's from the inaugural year of the Tasmania Football Association. We were so happy to think it was 1935, but to find it's the inaugural cup - that's unbelievable," he said.

This marks the second trophy to be returned to the club, following a 1936 trophy turning up in the Mowbray tip shop last year.

At the time, the club paid just $20 for the 1936 relic, which was covered in almost nine decades of soot and dust.

Having now been restored, the 1936 trophy sits pride of place in the club's headquarters, where this latest find is also expected to reside.

St Pat's communications officer Denine Richards said the move is continuing to turn up a lot of interesting artefacts from the storied history of the school, which in 2019 marked the centenary of the St Patrick's Christian Brothers' College.

"We're always looking for information, so we can learn a little bit more about the history of the college. We're always excited to find these kinds of links in the community," she said.

Back in 1935, when St Patrick's Old-Collegian Football Club secured the win, The Examiner was also there on the sidelines keeping score.

The win made its way into that week's paper, which was then uncovered by St. Pat's archival team.

Listed under the paper's "The Amateurs" section in the Monday, September 2, 1935 edition. The win was recorded as follows.

"The 1935 premiership of the Amateur League was won by the St Patrick's Old Collegians team at East Launceston on Saturday, when it defeated the Old Launcestonians.

"St Patrick's seemed out of touch in the first term and Old Launcestonians established an early lead but St Pats went away quickly in the next quarter, and at the final bell held the lead by 113 points.
