Major rivers are flowing strongly again after last week's rain fed into them from ground often waterlogged.

The South Esk was boosted from its upper reaches, the lower Macquarie again from the Lake River while the North Esk and Meander also flowed strongly enough to please anglers looking for trout foraging in sidewaters.

Curries River Dam is well-liked by anglers trying all methods with plenty of browns and rainbows being taken.

Fly fishers at its opening found trout rising when wind eased and one boated five fish.

Lake Leake might be worthwhile too, given Inland Fisheries Service information that transferred into it since May were 1200 adult wild brownies and 2000 yearling rainbows.

The IFS also states that this water always fishes best before Christmas.

With Lake Leake spilling for months, boats will doubtless remain popular.

The striped trumpeter season will close from September 1 to October 31 to allow spawning.

Delicious and prized by anglers, striped trumpeter are targeted along the state's eastern and southern coasts, especially over inshore reefs.

Baits are mainly fish or squid but lures including flies are also taken sometimes.
