The Launceston 26-year-old, who finished 16th in the individual triathlon and anchored Australia to ninth in the mixed relay at his maiden Olympics, has flown on to Canada where he is contesting the World Triathlon Championship Series in Montreal.
Having qualified for the elite men's super-sprint race final, Birtwhistle completed the 300-metre swim, 7.2km bike ride and 2km run in 22:31 to finish in seventh place.
He was 23 seconds behind the winners as France landed a podium clean sweep courtesy of Dorian Coninx (22:08), Vincent Luis (22:09) and Léo Bergere (22:11).
Birtwhistle's fellow Olympians Aaron Royle (16th) and Matt Hauser (18th) were the next best Aussies.
