COVID-19: What the latest vaccine projections mean for Tasmania's AstraZeneca supply

It comes after the release of long-awaited modelling from the federal government forecasted the AstraZeneca vaccine would be phased out, with Pfizer and Moderna to become the key vaccines.

Mr Webster said the modelling forecasts for the vaccine roll-out provided a level of surety of supply for Tasmania.

"The Vaccination Allocation Horizons are indicative numbers which give us an upper range of vaccine supply we can call on," he said.

"Importantly, they also tell us we have the supply for people to continue to make their vaccination bookings as soon as possible.

"I want to reassure Tasmanians that AstraZeneca will still be available for second doses beyond October - the reduction in the last quarter is to show the presumption that all eligible people over the age of 60 will utilise this vaccine and have had at least one dose by the end of September."

Mr Webster said this would only be achieved if Tasmanians continue to make booking with their GPs.

"People should book now and not wait until later in the year," he said.

"I also want to reiterate that all Tasmanians that have safely had their first dose of AstraZeneca should continue to have their second dose so that they are fully vaccinated.

"The recent outbreaks in Victoria and NSW are a reminder that COVID-19 still poses a risk to our community, so if you are eligible for a vaccine, book in now and make sure you receive two doses to ensure you receive the maximum possible protection."

Mr Webster said the Moderna numbers listed in the Commonwealth Vaccination Allocation Horizons were indicative.

At this stage Moderna has not yet been approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration.

"It will not be confirmed as part of the rollout until that approval is given," he said.
