With a record of 8-2, the Torns sit just behind an unbeaten Frankston Blues in second on the NBL1 South ladder.

"I think that's a great position for us to be in because those two games we did lose, we learned so much about ourselves and what we needed to focus on," Tornadoes head coach Sarah Veale said.

"If we hadn't lost those two games, we might've had a false sense of security of where we were really at.

"We're very aware of the areas we need to improve on if we're serious of winning or making the final - and we are very serious about that."

The Torns' latest conquest came in the form of a 48-point quashing of the Hobart Chargers in Ulverstone a fortnight ago.

Veale said her team continued to benefit from the veteran talents of Kelsey Griffin, who recently re-signed with her WNBL team the Canberra Capitals; she scored 28 points against the Chargers.

Burnie superstar Mariah Payne totalled 29 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in the match, earning herself NBL1 South player of the week honours.

"Kelsey's [Griffin] really investing her time in trying to develop Mariah in that point guard spot," Veale said.

"Post players love to play with great point guards and that's certainly something that, with Kelsey's experience, she's really helped Mariah to look at the game differently and see parts of it she hadn't been exposed to before.

"Kelsey's been instrumental in Mariah improving every week as a leading point guard."

During the team's bye week, Veale said she hoped her team would use the break as a chance to take a breath and be proud of their start to the season.

"I think it's really important for our team to have a few days rest," she said.

"I've said to the girls they need to just stop and rest because mentally and physically, everyone's tired right now.

"They'll come back from a few days off re-energised and motivated to go again because they'll had a little bit of a break."

The side planned to hold a practice training match on Monday. Team captain and rebound machine Keely Froling will return to the team on Tuesday after quarantining in Melbourne.

The Torns are scheduled to head to Victoria this weekend for a double-header against the Albury Wodonga Bandits and Melbourne Tigers (COVID pending).
