Works on the performance art space started in January, but a crane has been on site for the last few days.
Principal Andy Muller said performance and theatre had taken a beating during COVID-19, and while it's not the reason for the works, it's certainly good timing.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"We are taking an interest and investing in the theatre and performing arts space," he said.
"The school is proud to be able to support our theatre community in this way."
The redevelopment will include new entrances to the theatre, increased capacity and a new space to hold gala and opening night events.
Mr Muller said the new spaces would help make the theatre area more inclusive for small gatherings, and the new entrances would allow audiences to arrive more discreetly.
"We are moving the doors so that when guests arrive, if they are arriving late, they are not going to interrupt the rest of the school," he said.

Birrelli Architects did the design, and Anstie Construction is overseeing the construction.
Mr Muller said the school had partnered with Birrelli before, and we're pleased with how well they understood Scotch Oakburn's ethos.
"They really get our school's direction, which is great to see, and they say that physical buildings are an embodiment of that ethos."
The new theatre and performing arts space will be complete by mid-July, but the school will hold a grand opening for its Spring Concert in September.
