Tasmania Police have referred a historical rape allegation against a doctor to the state's commission of inquiry into abuse in public institutions.

The family of Zoe Duncan allege she was sexually assaulted at the Launceston General Hospital an 11-year-old in May 2001, the ABC reports.
Police said they investigated the allegations in 2001 but available evidence did not support charges being laid.
"We have not yet received a referral from the Department of Health, however Tasmania Police will be referring the matter to the Commission of Inquiry for investigation," they said in a statement.
The state government in November announced a commission of inquiry would be set up to examine sexual abuse in government institutions.
It was launched after child sex abuse charges against Launceston General Hospital nurse James Geoffrey Griffin, who took his own life, came to light.
Prominent lawyer Marcia Neave, who chaired the royal commission into family violence in Victoria, will head the inquiry.
Premier Peter Gutwein said more will be known about the timing of the commission later this month.
Zoe Duncan died in 2017 aged 28 from epilepsy, while the doctor - who has moved interstate - denies the abuse allegations, the ABC reports.
Health Minister Sarah Courtney described the allegations as concerning and urged anyone with "stories to tell" to come forward to the commission.
