$150,000 Gold Sovereign on radar for impressive Mowbray two-year-old winner

Trinder said Outbound would probably take on the state's best youngsters in the $150,000 Gold Sovereign at Mowbray on February 10.

"That's the natural progression - whether he is mature enough mentally is the question," the trainer said.

"He is a progressive little horse and, although he still does a lot wrong, he stayed strong and focused over the last 200m and should take improvement out of the run."

Jockey Brendon McCoull agreed, suggesting that although Elwick Stakes winner Turk Warrior would be hard to beat in the Gold Sovereign, Outbound "should measure up to the others."

McCoull sat Outbound in fifth place before swooping past the leaders rounding the home turn and racing clear to score by three lengths.

First-starter Angeli, who was two lengths behind the second-last horse turning for home, ran on powerfully for an eye-catching second.

Outbound, by Exceed And Excel stallion Outreach, was a $47,000 buy at a Sydney ready-to-run sale in October.

Trainer Cameron Thompson continued a nice run of form when Fun N Frolic led all the way in the 3YO Maiden.

The Mawingo filly took a wide barrier out of the equation when she was clearly the quickest to begin and jockey Siggy Carr reported she was able to cross to the rail "with ease".

From then on, she was never threatened as she scored by a length from Always A Winner, who chased her all the way, with first-starter Zeva Royale coming from last to be 4-1/2 lengths away third.

Thompson said Troy Baker would have retained the ride on Fun N Frolic had he not been suspended but he was "rapt" to get Siggy instead.

"She has good hands and I knew she would rate her in front," the trainer said.

Although Thompson said Fun N Frolic was probably limited, by picking up a Tasbred bonus she had more than repaid her purchase price.

Connections got $16,00 to go with the race stake of almost $12,000 while Grenville Stud picked up $4000 as the breeder.

Thompson said he had nothing specific in mind for Fun N Frolic - "I'm just happy to have won a race with her."

The connections of Mariposa also picked up a Tasbred bonus when she won the Maiden Plate.

Trainer John Blacker said he had originally earmarked the major fillies' races for the three-year-old but things didn't go to plan.

"But picking up a bonus race is better than a minor placing in the Strutt Stakes," he said.

In fact, Mariposa earned her owners a total of almost $28,000 while the Strutt Stakes runner-up gets $18,000.

Mandy Gunn, who is one of the part-owners, also picked up the $4000 breeder's bonus.

Blacker said that Mariposa got a gun run from barrier 1 and benefited from Codi's Jordan claim, carrying only 52kg, but it was nonetheless a strong win.

Siggy Carr had three wins on the board after the first five races.

She followed up her victory for Cameron Thompson with two wins for her own stable on Coronation Keith and Coronation Pia.

Coronation Keith raced on the pace to win the Class 1 Handicap as an odds-on favourite while Carr got on inside run in the straight to score on $5 chance Coronation Pia in the Benchmark 60 Handicap.

Coronation Pia was Carr's sixth winner as a trainer in less than three weeks.

Tasracing will use a six per cent increase in stakes funding from February 1 to lift base stakes in each code.

The industry bodies representing the three codes made various recommendations on how the extra money could be spent but at the end of the day Tasracing stuck to the basics.

The base stake will rise from $18,500 to $20,000.

Age maidens, class 3 races and benchmark 84s will rise from $19,000 to $20,500.

Age and open handicap will increase from $20,000 to $21,000.

The rest of the increase will go to the divided race pool.

Races worth $5500 up to $5750.

Races worth $6800 up to $7000.

Races worth $8100 up to $8750.

Races worth $10,000 up to $10,500.

Feature races with a winning stake of less than $3000 will rise by $1000.

Feature races with a winning stake of more than $3000 will rise by $3000.

The balance of the code's increase will be injected into stakes for graded events and heats of feature events. This will provide an extra $95 for every race.

Tasracing said certain recommendations pertaining to the harness and greyhound codes could be considered after further analysis or when the electronic payments system is upgraded.

These included changes to harness racing's Tasbred scheme and the introduction of an unplaced trainer subsidy for the greyhounds.
