The track was upgraded from a soft 5 to a good 4 before the first race.

"The ground came up a little bit soft last start which probably wasn't suitable for her but she still ran really well (to finish second)," Trinder said.

"I think credit for tonight's win goes to Brendon (McCoull). He gave her a lovely, patient ride tracking up behind them and it was probably the difference between (finishing) first or second."

Our Shinkansen has now won twice in only four starts but Trinder isn't making any bold plans.

"Her record is really good and she's a terribly honest mare but we had a lot of trouble with her early doors because she was very soft in the bone," the trainer said.

"We'll let her tell us - she can just go through her grades and we'll see where she ends up."

McCoull thinks the four-year-old will climb a fair bit higher up the ladder.

"She got the job done well and beat a couple of smart horses," the jockey said.

"I think when we look back we'll say that was a pretty strong class 1."

McCoull later won his sixth consecutive race while riding a Trinder-trained horse on Dusty Joe in the Class 1 Plate.

The long odds-on favourite outstayed his rivals over 2150m and Trinder said he would soon be heading for a spell.

"He's done a good job but I don't want to over-expose him so he won't go much further this prep," the trainer said.

Has The Look gave the Schuuring family a sentimental - and lucrative - win in the TTC Maiden.

The three-year-old is trained by Nigel Schuuring and raced by his wife Kristy who is also the breeder, thereby giving the family all of the $20,000 Tasbred bonus attached to the race.

Has The Look is a daughter of their foundation broodmare Miss Barysh who died recently.

Kristy Schuuring said the Toronado filly had gone shin-sore as a two-year-old, hence was having only her fourth race start.

"It wasn't ideal backing her up from last week but that's the way the calendar was and we felt she needed racing anyway because she's been a bit green," the owner said.

"She'll probably go to the paddock for a couple of weeks now and we'll look for something towards the end of December then probably go to the fillies' races over the carnival, hopefully."

Has The Look wobbled a little rounding the home turn but, once apprentice Brandon Louis straightened her up, she quickly raced past favourite Olympic Honour and went on to score by three lengths.

Dual licence-holder Siggy Carr has similar aspirations for Northern Spirit who won the second division of the maiden at only her second start.

Carr trains the Needs Further filly for some new stable clients but was unable to take the ride due to a suspension.

She was more than pleased with the job done by her partner Troy Baker who came with a well-timed run to dispose of hot favourite Supalopo by a long neck.

Carr said she would probably extend Northern Spirit to 1600m at her next start because "if she can run a mile, a lot of doors open."

"When (Victorian trainer) Lloyd Kennewell sent her to me he said he didn't know whether she was much good but it looks like she's just needed a bit of time and bit more ground," the trainer said.

Carr and Baker teamed up again to win the Rating 0-60 Handicap with Coronation Pia who is probably in her last preparation before being retired to stud in Victoria.

Baker brought up a treble when Liffeybeau returned from a spell with a strong win in the Benchmark 84 Handicap.

Trainer Michael Trinder said the seven-year-old may have earned a crack at the $100,000 Newmarket in a fortnight.

"He's run in the Newmarket a couple of times and hasn't been beaten far without much luck," Trinder said.

"I'd say at his age this would be his last throw of the dice at winning a big race."
