A state government program, delivered by Tasmania's natural resource management groups, the Weed Action Fund opened for expressions of interest for its second round.

On Monday, NRM North and Primary Industries Minister Guy Barnett officially launched the second round of the program, to invite landowners and community groups to pitch their projects.

Weed Action Fund chairman Ian Sauer said the funding commitment would help landowners with long-term planning and management of noxious weeds on their property.

There is $200,000 on offer for a small grants program under the second round; however, further funding will be made available in the next six months.

The Tasmanian government established the weeds fund in 2018 and committed to funding it to the tune of $1 million a year for five years, which Mr Barnett described as a "fantastic commitment" by the government.

Mr Sauer said the first round of the program was over-subscribed, which proved the importance of the fund.

"We're looking for farmers, landowners, community groups to come together to tackle those weeds on their properties, or their neighbour's properties and work together to reduce the weed burden," Mr Sauer said.

Speakers at the launch event were in consensus that more work was needed to shift the attitude towards weeds and to ensure everyone took responsibility for their eradication.

The first round of the program had 75 applications and funded 34.

Successful projects include steps to target agricultural weeds such as Paterson's curse, horehound, gorse, Spanish heath, serrated tussock and Chilean needlegrass.

Grants of up to $10,000 are available to farmers, community organisations, land managers, industry and other entities.

Eligible activities include on-ground management of weeds, weed education and extension activities, and critical weed management planning.

Weed Action Fund coordinator Raelene Mibus said applications would be prioritised that proposed a strategic and targeted approach to tackling weeds and demonstrate co-investment through funds or in-kind support.

"Co-investment may include time, cash, or other resources such as labour, expertise, and equipment," she said.

Weed Action Fund grant applications close November 1.
