In career-best form 10 months out from next year's Tokyo Olympics, the 25-year-old will look to eclipse training partner Ryan Gregson's decade-old 3:31.06 in Friday's Diamond League meet in Doha, Qatar.

McSweyn's personal best at the distance was 3:31.48 in August and after last week's stunning 7:28.02 3000m effort - a personal best of nearly seven seconds - Gregson's record appears in real danger.

Coach Nic Bideau said McSweyn was beginning to feel comfortable competing with the world's best.

"That time was six seconds faster than he's ever run but it's more than the times, it's the way that he does it," Bideau said.

"What we always work on is you get fit and you get able to run fast enough so you're in competition with these guys and then you become an competitor.

"You be the best competitor you can be and Stewy's doing that, it's very hard to beat him.

"Only the very best guys can beat him and he doesn't allow people to beat him by not being better than him - he's getting better and better at using his strengths and taking the contest in areas that suit him."

Following Friday's race, McSweyn will continue training before deciding whether to compete in October 7's 10,000m event in Valencia, Spain.

The race, which will be headlined by Ugandan superstar Joshua Cheptegei's assault on the 26:17.53 world record, would give McSweyn the chance to improve his own national record of 27:23.80 in his last European outing for 2020.

His focus will then turn to July's Olympics, where he is down to compete in the 5000m and 10,000m.

However, the King Island star could yet forego the 5000m for the 1500m depending on circumstances.

"Clearly if he wants to he'll be selected in the 1500m because he's the fastest we've got," Bideau said.

"He'll want to do two events at the Olympic Games and fortunately Stewy's one of those guys who can train for the 10,000m and still run well for the 1500.

"Most guys have got to do very specific training to run well at 1500 - it's not really appropriate for running a good 10,000 but it can be done.

"Last year the women's 1500m and 10,000m was won by the same person so that got me thinking it's possible that Stewy could do that.

"But you don't know, we'll wait and see what the opposition are like, how his training has gone and what he really believes he can do well in."

History backs up Bideau's belief that McSweyn is destined for big things on the international stage.

Of the past six holders of McSweyn's 3000m Oceania record, Mottram was a world championship medallist and Kiwis John Walker and Rod Dixon were Olympic gold and bronze medallists respectively.

Albie Thomas, John Landy and Ron Clark were all either Olympic medallists, world record holders or both.

"I feel like what he's got now if he was in the final of the 1500, I can't see him not being in the top five," Bideau said.

"In the 10,000 the challenge is to be able to keep up.

"That's an event dominated by Africans whereas the 1500m was won by an American last time and the bronze medallist was from New Zealand, so there's been plenty of medallists from the western countries whereas in the 10,000 the only people that have got medals in that since the '60s have been guys from Africa.

"That doesn't mean you can't do it - it just means it's probably easier to put a man on the moon than win a medal in that but we're going to try."
