Labor leader Rebecca White asks questions relating to inquest into deaths of seven children

In Question Time in State Parliament on Wednesday, Mr Jaensch was quizzed about the coronial inquest by Labor leader Rebecca White.

Ms White referred to media reports from an expert witness who said staff made assessments without reference to all the available information and that high risk cases can get lost due to demand, with mistakes made.

She said the expert said staff were under constant pressure to close their cases quickly.

"Minister why is your department closing cases early and leaving children at risk?" Ms White asked.

Mr Jaensch said it was respectful to wait until the coroner's findings.

"An inquest process is underway and I believe it is important to allow the coroner to conduct that process thoroughly and fully," Mr Jaensch said.

"As we've said here before, the death of any child is a terrible tragedy.

"What we need to remember is that there are six families out there who are going through hell again this week as the circumstances of deaths of children in their care are examined closely, considered through a public inquest process."

Mr Jaensch said the inquest was also a difficult time for service providers and child safety staff.

Ms White questioned Mr Jaensch about cases investigated by a serious events review team that was set up in 2017.

She asked how many reviews had been initiated since June last year and if any had been refered to the coroner.

Mr Jaensch said he did not have the details with him but would provide advise as soon as possible.

A coronal inquest began on Monday into the deaths of seven children, aged between two months and 16 years, who died in the North or the North-West between 2014 and 2018.

All seven children were known to child safety services.
