Student Will Scott researched the life and death of solider Alfred Hearps, an Indigenous soldier for his essay entry for the Frank McDonald Memorial Prize in 2018.
In other news:
Mr Scott was selected for the prize and travelled to Europe and presented his research. He also travelled to Mouquet Farm to visit the final resting place of Mr Hearps.
However, that research will provide a new educational tool for years to come after a collaboration between former Rosevears MLC Kerry Finch, Mr Scott and the Aboriginal community.
Mr Scott has compiled a new booklet that brings together Mr Hearps' story, to be distributed in the community.
"When I started researching my essay I started learning more about the Indigenous soldiers, it was a part of the war I didn't know much about.
"But after learning about Mr Hearps' history I think it's very important to recognise and uphold Aboriginal culture."
Mr Scott said he wanted the booklet to help educate others and had a unique opportunity to present his findings at Mannalargenna day, thanks to Mr Finch.
Mr Finch said he knew the descendants of Mr Hearps would be at Mannalargenna day and organised for Mr Scott to be a speaker.
Greg Murray, a descendant of Mr Hearps said it was amazing to see their family's legacy remembered in this way.
"Everybody was absolutely stoked to see him remembered this way to the point we'd like to see something more permanently displayed," Mr Murray said.
"What he did was a major sacrifice but it wasn't just him but all the other Indigenous soldiers who never came home and could never have their own family lives."
Mr Murray and Mr Scott said more needed to be done to recognise the issues Indigenous soldiers faced when they returned home and that their stories needed to be told.
The booklet was printed thanks to the state government.
