A shortage of suitable races in Tasmania and the inability to travel interstate means that options for the seven-year-old are very limited.

"There's only one race for him in July and that's still three weeks away," Hillier said.

"The only open-class race this week is a discretionary and he'd be handicapped out of that.

"Hopefully there's some more races for him in August but the calendar isn't out yet.

"At the end of the day, we can't go anywhere so I'll just have to wait."

Ryley Major showed he had returned from a spell in good order with a soft trial win at Mowbray on Sunday night, rating 1:57.5 and running his last 800m (unofficially) in 55.4 seconds.

But, with no races to run in, Hillier is starting to think he may have the horse ready to go a bit too soon.

"He had six weeks off after the Tasmania Cup and he's been back in work for 10 weeks," the trainer said.

"I might have him up too early.

"I probably should have given him another two weeks out.

"But he's really good at the moment and that's the main thing."

A virus is going through some greyhound kennels in Tasmania.

It had a significant impact on the fields in Launceston on Monday night when heavy scratchings left two races with only four runners and another with five.

Cases of canine gastroenteritis have been reported on the mainland since early this year.

Ava Wine was the easiest winner at the meeting, scoring by 11 lengths. The Patrick Ryan-trained dog has now won five of his 12 starts.

Unraced three-year-old Julius was the fastest trial winner at Spreyton on Tuesday morning.

The Time For War - Throne Inn gelding went 48.64 while scoring by almost three lengths.

He is from the in-form Leanne Gaffney stable and is raced by a Star Thoroughbreds syndicate managed by Denise Martin.

Martin paid $77,500 for Julius at the 2018 Tasmanian Magic Millions auction.

It was the sixth highest price of the sale at which Martin bought only two horses.

The other, star filly Deroche, cost $61,000 and has since won $388,000.

Time For War is a group 2-winning son of Snitzel and Throne Inn was a group 3 winner in Sydney.

Gaffney, Rowan Hamer, Aiden Nunn and Cameron Thompson all won two trials.

A jockey displaying flu-like symptoms was stood down from riding at Gosford on Tuesday.

So too were nine other riders identified as having been in close proximity to the jockey at Rosehill on Saturday.

All 10 subsequently tested negative to COVID-19 and are free to resume riding from Wednesday.

Replacements riders were found for all their Gosford mounts and the meeting went ahead.

However, that would not have been possible in Tasmania where there are currently only 14 jockeys.

It emphasises how vulnerable local racing remains.
