The Longford Local District Committee has asked if the town's sewage could be tested for COVID-19 to trace the virus in the community.

At the committee's May 6 meeting, member Kevin Headlam raised the question if sewage testing could be used in an attempt to trace coronavirus in communities.
The committee asked the Northern Midlands Council to contact TasWater to see if testing would be possible at Longford.
Last month it was announced TasWater would sample raw sewage in the state for COVID-19 at six undisclosed locations as part of a national testing scheme.

The national scheme, run by Water Research Australia, came after a trial was conducted by the CSIRO and the University of Queensland.
The virus has been reported in faeces and wastewater.
The council will forward on the committee's request to TasWater.
