Senator McKim took to Twitter to announce his decision.
"I can confirm I will not be contesting the Leadership," he tweeted.
"Adam is the right person to lead us."
Senator McKim is one of the most experienced of all 10 Australian Greens having served as a member of the House of Assembly for 13 years and as Australia's first Greens minister.
It is expected that the sole Australian Greens member in the lower house, Adam Bandt, will be elected to replace Senator Di Natale who today announced he was stepping down to spend more time with his young family.
Former Australian Greens leader Dr Bob Brown praised Senator Di Natale and his time as leader.
"Richard had an integrity and honesty which is missing in politics and he will be missed," Dr Brown said.
"The Greens were the only major party that improved their vote, marginally, at the last election.
"We held every seat."
He would not publicly support any candidate for the leadership.
"I will leave it up to the party room," Dr Brown said.
After Senator Brown stepped down in 2012 he was replaced by another Tasmanian senator Christine Milne.
The Greens currently have nine senators.
Mr Bandt also confirmed on Twitter he would seek to replace Senator Di Natale.
"I will be standing for Greens Leader," Mr Bandt tweeted.
"Thank you Richard for your leadership and service to Aust. I look forward to talking with my colleagues about how we share leadership across the House & Senate as we fight the climate emergency and inequality with a Green New Deal."
Dr Brown said the Greens needed a strong leader.
"Never before have the Greens been more needed than now in an age of climate emergency," he said.
"Richard is a hero of the Greens and has laid the foundations for the next leader to take the Greens to a record vote in 2022."
Sportsbet have Mr Bandt, who is co-deputy leader, as favourite at $1.95 ahead of co-deputy Larissa Waters.
"The Greens currently have two deputies, but there will be a new sheriff in town tomorrow. We're not expecting a showdown, only an easy transition for Bandt,'' said Rich Hummerston from Sportsbet.
