The Launceston 29-year-old will miss at least a fortnight that the Canes medical staff admit could swell out to four weeks on the sidelines.
Scans on Saturday showed Faulkner sustained a low-grade calf tear while bowling in Friday night's home loss.
"We are confident James will be able to get back on the field for the Hurricanes in the latter stages of the tournament," team physiotherapist Stewart Williamson said.
"At this stage, it's difficult to put an exact time frame on a return, as we see how the injury responds to treatment.
"James has navigated similar injuries in the past. He is a very experienced cricketer, who we know will be diligent with his rehabilitation."

Just hours after the grim diagnosis, Faulkner posted an Instagram video where he had joined in a swing session while babysitting near Battery Point Community Hall.
This comes after the hobbling star convinced Caleb Jewell to be his runner for the final delivery of the game.
Bailey also kept up some good-natured ribbing when asked after Friday night's finish of Faulkner's chances.
"If he was a horse, well goodnight Jimmy, I reckon," Bailey laughed. "You probably can't say that now - it's been a rough year for horses."
But Bailey soon expressed his mate would be missed.
"We have a couple of guys waiting in the wings, but he has been pretty important for us with new-ball wickets at the top of the order."
