Steyn keen to move on from BBL 'shocker'

The quick retired from Test cricket earlier this year and had his BBL debut for the Melbourne Stars put on hold for two games as he battled a side strain.

The paceman was cleared to face Adelaide on the Gold Coast on Friday but things didn't go to plan.

A series of half volleys were met with glee from Jake Weatherald, who smashed two sixes and two fours in succession over mid-off before skying a catch to finish an eventful over.

Steyn returned later and hit a better length to finish with 1-29 from three overs.

"My first over was a shocker," he laughed.

"Maybe nerves, eager to perform, it just shows there's a bit of a care factor, you want to do well for your team and I've been really excited about playing in the Big Bash.

"You want to come in and put a stamp on the game, so there's always a bit of nerves."

He said it was often tough to live up to his own expectations when arriving in a new league.

"Last campaign (in South Africa) I wanted to be more aggressive, take more wickets but tonight I didn't feel like I had that in myself," he said.

"And when you go for 20 in your first over you drag things back; you don't want to look like an absolute idiot in your first game."

Steyn was impressed by captain Glenn Maxwell's (43 off 25) innings, which featured two incredible sixes over point, likening him to a former Proteas teammate set to join the Brisbane Heat later in the tournament.

"Guys like AB de Villiers are 360 degree players and he's up there too," Steyn said.

"Virender Sehwag was someone who could open the blade like that, but clever because he can walk across and hit you over deep square leg (the next ball).

"As a bowler you're always kind of guessing 'what's he up to?'."

"He's a phenomenal thinker of the game and ultimately he can execute them too."
