The Tasmanian sprint star, who triumphed in the Latrobe Gift in 2017, will have six-time Australian champion Alex Hartmann as a competitor this time around.

The two have been rivals many times on the track, but it will be there first competitive outing on grass, with December to be Hartmann's first appearance in the series.

Hale will look to add a second Latrobe Gift to his collection, as well aim for the Burnie Gift, while Hartmann will run the Devonport and Burnie carnivals.

"It's going to be awesome to have Hartmann here," Hale said on Monday.

"He's a monster of a guy and once he's up and going, just chews the track up with each stride. I've had his measure over 100m recently, but the extra 20m of the gift races will suit him and I can see us having a race that comes down to the dip"

Rio Olympian Hartmann will run the Bay Sheffield in Adelaide, before trekking to race in Devonport and Burnie.

"I'm pretty excited in all honesty. I've only ever run at one gift race in my career, and that was back in high school, so I'm curious to see how I go now I'm a little faster," Hartmann said.

"I've been training on grass tracks for the last five or so years, so it shouldn't be too much of an issue. In saying that, the grass I've been training on has been quite dry and uneven, so I'll be looking forward to running on something a little better maintained."

Hale said he "really wanted" to get an elusive Burnie sash, having started behind scratch previously in his quest to get that title.

"Sure the prize money would help my Olympic campaign, but the history and drama there is something else," Hale added.

"Hopefully we both make it through to the final, if not, we will no doubt meet in the back markers invitational."

With both athletes using the series to springboard their Tokyo 2020 Olympic years, Hartmann said he was coming into some great shape.

"Training's been outstanding. We've had a very solid block of off-season work and we've really started tightening up my technique. If I can put everything we've been working on into a race, I'll be very happy," he said.
