After suffering a hefty 125-run defeat against Western Australia to open the season on Saturday, the Vics again found little joy with the bat and were dismissed after 47.5 overs for just 185.
All-rounder James Faulkner (2-45) did the early damage, firstly bowling Test opener Marcus Harris for five in his first over after a two-year domestic one-day hiatus.
Faulkner then removed promising youngster Will Pucovski (10) with the help of a stunning catch from wicketkeeper Ben McDermott.
Jackson Bird (2-27) claimed the key scalps of Australian one-day captain Aaron Finch (12) and Vics' skipper Peter Handscomb (13) to leave the reigning champions teetering at 4-46.
Glenn Maxwell (34) helped stage a brief revival along with the Matt Short (27) but both fell to debutant seamer Nathan Ellis (3-35).
Only some judicious batting down the order from Will Sutherland helped propel the Vics past 150, with the teenage all-rounder posting a timely maiden one-day half century before failing to Ellis for 53.
