According to a motion moved by Opposition Whip in the Senate Anne Urquhart - also a Tasmanian senator - on the first day of the new parliament, Labor was granted permission for Senator Polley to take time off from July 2 until August 1 "for personal reasons".
IN OTHER NEWS:
On Friday, a spokesman for Senator Polley would only say this: "I can confirm that Senator Polley has been on personal leave."
Senator Polley, a member of the Labor right, was elected in 2004.
Under former Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, she was most recently Shadow Assistant Minister for Ageing.
Senator Polley did not receive a place in new Labor leader Anthony Albanese's ministry.
