A Big Bash League home match for the Hurricanes has been sold to the Northern Territory government and will be played at Alice Springs.

Cricket Tasmania chief executive Nick Cummins would not disclose the sale price for the match.

Cummins said Burnie and Devonport had been ruled out because the grounds were not up to standard.

"A match at Burnie or Devonport would not be able to be broadcast because the broadcast infrastructure is not adequate," he said.

"We can't reveal the sale price because it is commercial-in-confidence.

"If we had played two games in four days it is most likely we would run at a loss."

Cummins would not be drawn on funding for cricket in Tasmania compared to AFL funding.

He said Cricket Tasmania received $1 million a year which was tagged for specific areas such as women's cricket and education.

"We are always open to more funding but we're happy with our existing funding and this government has doubled our funding compared to previous years," Cummins said.

The Tasmanian Government's $19 million five-year funding deal with Hawthorn is due to end in 2021.

It is also spending $150,000 on a business case for a Tasmanian AFL team.

TT-Line has a private sponsorship deal with North Melbourne but the cost has not been made public.

Sport and Recreation Minister Jeremy Rockliff said Cricket Tasmania had been "completely transparent about the reasons for taking the decision they have".

"Importantly, Hobart still retains four home games as was the case for the first seven years of the BBL in Tasmania," he said. "On top of that we will take the game to the North and North-West of the state to host BBL and WBBL matches."

Labor's sport spokesman David O'Byrne said local matches were vital.

"Our preference is local content but if one game is sold and reinvested here that is a good thing," he said.

"We would look at ensuring appropriate facilities across the state including at Burnie and Devonport."
