She also wanted to put some colour into the Kings Meadows Renal Unit, where Norm receives his treatment every week.
So Mrs Hamer did what she does best - she started making quilts.
In the three years that have since passed she has donated countless quilts to the unit, ensuring all patients are kept warm and comfortable.
Describing it as something small she could do, Mrs Hamer said she had lost count of how many quilts she had made.

"Norm will be on dialysis for the rest of his life, and I will keep making the quilts for as long as I can," she said.
"I just make them, take them in, and then let the staff decide where they should go. If it helps make someone feel better, that's all I can ask for."
Clinical nurse consultant Tania Battaglini-Smith said both staff and patients at the unit were very grateful for Anne's contributions.
"The smiles on the patients faces when we ask them if they would like one of Anne's blankets is huge,"she said.
"They really appreciate that someone else, who doesn't know them, has taken the time to make something so beautiful for them. And they certainly brighten up the renal unit."
