CrazySocks4Docs encourages healthcare professionals to wear odd socks, in an effort to raise awareness of doctors living with mental illness.

Founded by Melbourne cardiologist Dr Geoff Toogood in 2017, the social media campaign has since gone global with doctors in Canada, Europe, the US, UK and South Africa taking part.

Event organiser and LGH GP liaison consultant Isobel Morse said while doctors were good at taking care of others, they often neglected taking care of themselves.

"We want to start the conversation to normalise talking about our own mental health, which I think as doctors we are notoriously not good at," she said.

"We also want to get all of the GPs in Launceston on board, so we can all join forces for every health care professional.

"So every staff member of every health care facility will ideally be wearing crazy socks on Friday."

A 2010 report from Beyond Blue found that Australian medical practitioners had a higher suicide rate compared with the general population, with 34 per cent of medical students reporting they would not seek help for depression.

LGH executive director of medical services Dr Peter Renshaw said every junior doctor was required to have their own GP, to offer external medical advice if they were struggling.

"We have some things in places, but it is not universal and we could probably do it better," he said.

"Doctors are trained that they work until the work is done, not when their shift is over.

"Sometimes we take advantage of that or don't acknowledge working hours that others would consider unsafe.

"Doctors are proud that we are not shift workers, but sometimes we are our own worst enemies."
