With Winnaleah talent Kelsie Rainbow sharing the captaincy with Melissa Bragg, the Magpies took a two-goal lead into the first change as the former combined well with Cavaliers captain Shelby Miller in the middle of the court.
The home side then began to wrestle back ascendancy, securing a one-goal advantage at the half which was then stretched to four at the final break.
The Magpies went on a 5-0 run midway through the final term to square the game up, but could not win back the lead as the match finished with a succession of converted attempts.
Northern Hawks jet Zoe Claridge shared goal shooting duties with Jane Cook for the first three quarters before sitting out the last term.
Miller played the first two quarters in wing attack before a last-quarter switch-up saw her change places with Rainbow, who spent the first three terms in centre.
The two sides meet again at 11am Sunday at the same venue.
