Mr Bennett, 20, has been a fully-fledged motor technician since the end of January, but winning the TACC Auto Apprenticeships Mechanical Apprentice of the Year gong on Saturday night was the icing in the cake for him.
"I was surprised. I knew I was nominated, but winning was pretty surreal," he said.

Business owner Gary Luttrell put Mr Bennett's name forward and was thrilled he won.
"It's a pretty high award," Mr Luttrell said.
"I thought he had the talent; I could see that from the first day he started," he said.
Asked what was next for him, Mr Bennett said he planned to keep developing his skills at Challenge Motors, which has provided him with the opportunity to "learn a lot more because you do everything".
"If he does decided to move on this is pretty good to have on your resume, but I hope he doesn't," Mr Luttrell said.
The Tasmanian Automobile Chamber of Commerce has been running the TACC Castrol Motor Industry Awards since 2005, recognising the state's best automotive businesses.
TACC general manager Malcolm Little said awards showed the association members' dedication to quality and their passion for the automotive industry.
"Winners of the TACC Castrol Motor Industry Awards really are the best in the Tasmanian automotive industry," Mr Little said.
"It's fantastic to see members wanting to share their stories and successes," he said.
Awards are presented in 13 categories: aftermarket and retailing; automotive specialisation; car (new and used), motorcycle and tyre dealerships; engine reconditioning; towing; body, underbody and mechanical (small and large) repairs; and auto electrics.
Entries were evaluated on approach to customer service, professional development, industry improvement, and environmental and occupational health and safety.
