Councillor Glenn McGuinness will put forward a notice of motion with the aim to invite the state government to join in a conversation with the council to create a Bay of Fires Master Plan.
In his submission, Cr McGuinness the council had completed a master plan for Binalong Bay and a Regional Activity Assessment was pending. However, he believed the importance of the Bay of Fires required a "much more holistic approach".
"Bay of Fires is accepted as the third tourism icon of the East Coast. The triumvirate consists of Bay of Fires, Freycinet National Park and Maria Island," he said. "Unfortunately the response to Bay of Fires has been a little slower than that to the other two."
IN OTHER NEWS:
Cr McGuinness said funds had been spent on Maria Island with "spectacular success", and the same had happened at Freycinet.
"I would hate to see a situation with the Bay of Fires whereby visitation continued to increase without a decent plan in place. At peak times parking in Binalong Bay and The Gardens is already chaotic to say the least," he said.
Major items for discussion would include parking, protection of historical sites, maintenance of free camping sites, bushfire and flood management, and accomodation.
The conversation would also include other stakeholders such as the state's Aboriginal community, Bay of Fires residents, and East Coast Tourism.
The meeting will take place on Monday from 10am at the St Helens Council Chambers.
