The committee will hear from representatives from Tasmania Police's firearm services division, Gun Control Australia, the Legal Aid Commission of Tasmania, the Australian Nurses and Midwifery Union, and the Tasmanian Conservation Trust.
Legal Aid is expected to raise potential weaknesses in the state's firearm application process which asks people to voluntarily disclose whether they suffer from a diagnosed medical condition including mental health conditions.
It said family violence offending was not always reported, and therefore, violent past behaviour may not be exposed by a background check.
