However, just like the mythical phoenix, this region is shaking itself off and rising up out of the embers. And with the annual Willie Smith's Huon Valley Mid-Winter Festival coming up, there's never been a better time to celebrate.
Held 12-14 July, this much-loved festival offers three jam-packed days of feasting, folklore and good vibes at its new home at the Huon Valley Showgrounds.
And, as Festival Director and Willie Smith's Cider Makers Co-Founder Sam Reid says, the change of location means there'll be plenty of room for everyone.
"Last year we had 18,000 flock to the festival for a weekend of foot-stompingly good folk music, feasting on awesome local produce and revelling in folklore. But we were bursting at the seams, so we're going back to our rural roots, moving down the road to the agricultural sheds of the showgrounds," he said.
Longtime festival goers can rest assured that what's always made it so special will remain unchanged, including Nayri Niara's welcome ceremony that sees the burning of a two-storey high effigy of 'Big Willie'.
And with a little more room to move, the festival can welcome new acts, including a long table lunch that put's the region's produce front and centre.
"We're thrilled to be holding a Mid-Winter Banquet this year," said Festival Manager, Krystal Cox.
Describing it as "a heart-warming winter feast full of fresh produce from the Huon Producer's Network - all cooked over fire" this is one event you won't want to miss.
Festival organisers are also encouraging the community to get creative with the inaugural Apple Valley Sculpture Competition with $6,000 in prize money for the lucky winner.
With good food and eclectic fun on offer this is a mid-winter festival the whole family will enjoy.
