The forecast swell and weather conditions look to provide big surf for competitors on Saturday.
The event's location will be decided late on Friday as the swell peaks with popular big wave local spots the 'Wedge' at South Arm, May's Point at Lauderdale and Seven Mile Point on the list of potential locations.
The selected location will be posted on Surfing Tasmania's Facebook page on Friday evening.
The event, in memory of sporting and surfing legend Paul Johannesen, draws the best surfers from all divisions who enjoy the unique Eddie Aikau format of the event.
All surfers compete in just two heats with their best two rides tallied and their highest ride doubled to find the winner.
Competitions include big wave surfers such as former winner Marty Paradisis and Zeb Critchlow who will compete against younger surfers including Rudy Davis, of Clifton Beach, West Coast Classic winner Matt Gaby, of Burnie, Adam Hendricks, of Ulverstone, and Jy Johannesen, of Hobart.
The women's division will feature an exciting tussle between current Open Women's Champion Luca Brodribb, of Park Beach, Stella Gibson, of Hobart, Claire McManus, of Scamander and Sophie Adams, of Penguin.
The competition will kick off at 8.30am on Saturday.
