In a game of seven yellow cards, a Tyler McDonald penalty corner put Tasmania ahead after 10 minutes but Harry Roberts equalised with a 35th-minute field goal.
Coached by Vanessa McDonald, the team began its Pool A fixtures with a 3-0 defeat of South Australia with field goals from Harvey Bessell, McDonald and Josh Commins.
Tasmania's next match is against Victoria at 5.30pm on Thursday.
Ilene Carr's girls team suffered a 4-0 loss to NSW Blue in their opening game of the tournament.
In the under-15 national championships, being played at Narellan in NSW, Tasmania's girls team won two of its opening three fixtures.
After a 3-0 win over Queensland the team didn't take well to an 8.15am start in its second fixture, losing 2-0 to the host state.
However, they bounced back later the same day to beat Western Australia Black 3-1 thanks to a double for Maddison Brooks and an Emma Fenner field goal.
Sofie McLeod's team will complete its pool matches against ACT on Friday.
A double from Kiah House helped the Tasmanian boys team earn a 2-2 draw against Victoria Development, but Nathan Dart's outfit heavily lost its other two fixtures to NSW and Western Australia Gold.
They also have a rest day on Thursday before completing their pool games against Northern Territory on Friday.
