City of Launceston mayor Albert van Zetten said UTAS Stadium's modular big screen would be transported into the city for Saturday's Civic Square Cinema event.
"Using the modular scoreboard in Civic Square is something we trialled a few years ago, and the revamp of Civic Square means it's now a much more inviting space for this kind of event," Cr van Zetten said.
The two PG-rated films being screened are Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle at 3.30pm, and The Greatest Showman at 6.30pm.
Food vans and the Launceston Library's Pod Cafe will be serving food and drinks at the event.
People are encouraged to bring along beanbags, chairs, picnic rugs, and picnics.
"We hope it will be a great afternoon and evening of free entertainment for Launceston families, and we look forward to seeing plenty of people there," Cr van Zetten said.
Civic Square Cinema is a smoke and alcohol free event. Toilets will be available in the Launceston Library.
