Senator Hanson was captured on video by an undercover Al Jazeera journalist saying there were "a lot of questions" about the Port Arthur massacre that left 35 people dead in 1996.
The footage shows Senator Hanson discussing the massacre.
"An MP said it would actually take a massacre in Tasmania to change the gun laws in Australia," Senator Hanson said.
"Haven't you heard that?" Senator Hanson asks Al Jazeera's Rodger Muller.
The journalist was pretending to be a representative of a fake lobby group, Gun Rights Australia, created for the Al Jazeera investigation.
"Have a look at it. It was said on the floor of Parliament. I've read a lot and I have read the book on it, Port Arthur. A lot of questions there," Senator Hanson said.
Tasmania Police Association president and former Special Operations Group member Colin Riley said the member of Parliament's comments were, firstly; ill-informed, unnecessary, and categorically wrong.
"... they are hurtful to survivors, affected family members and to those emergency service responders who were involved," he said.
Mr Riley responded to the Port Arthur massacre before and after the apprehension of the offender, Martin Bryant.
"It is an unfortunate thing when you have something that happens like in New Zealand, it opens the wounds up and then you have someone in parliament making comments like this and it just opens the wounds up further," he said.
"I'm sorry to those people suffering that this had to be brought up and if people need help to just reach out."
