Following news that Hobart will be unlikely to host a Test match until the 2023-24 season, Australia was conspicuous in its absence from the state’s fixture list released on Tuesday.
The home nation will instead play at Brisbane, Perth, Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne, and could double up at any of the latter three should it make the semi-finals and final.
But die-hard Tasmanian fans can’t complain of not having enough cricket at their fingertips, with Bellerive Oval’s eight fixtures the most of any venue in the tournament.
Hobart will host steadily improving minnows Bangladesh on at least three occasions during the group stage before hosting two-time semi-finalist New Zealand in the Super 12 stage.
The Black Caps are ranked among the top favourites for next year’s tournament, while Bangladesh is well-placed to fight for its best-ever finish.
The venue will also see at least three clashes between qualifying nations, which could include the likes of Scotland, Zimbabwe and the UAE.
Cricket Tasmania chief executive Nick Cummins said he was pleased with the state’s haul of matches.
“It’s always challenging in a tournament of this size for every state to get the games they want,” Cummins said.
“We’re pleased to get eight games - we would have liked to have had Australia play in Hobart but Australian games are pretty hot property in the T20 World Cup.
“Obviously we’re really pleased to be having one of the groups of teams play off in Hobart, so great to get eight games across the tournament played in Tasmania.
“We’re really pleased with that and excited to have New Zealand and Bangladesh locked in, and we’re looking forward to seeing who the other teams are going to be as the tournament takes shape later in the year.”
The World Cup will begin on October 18, with the final to be played nearly a month later on November 15.
Sixteen teams will take part, with the world’s top 10 ranked nations to be joined by another six sides, who will be determined in qualifying in late 2019.
Bellerive Oval’s two Super 12 matches - which will pit the Group B runner-up against the winner of Group A and New Zealand - will be the only fixtures on October 25 and 27 respectively.
The 10-team women’s T20 World Cup begins in February 2020 and will be hosted across six venues in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Canberra.
