Freeman has impressed at under-19 level for Tasmania and Australia in recent months and has been drafted in as a replacement for the retiring Johan Botha, a move approved by Cricket Australia’s technical committee.
Hurricanes coach Adam Griffith said Freeman would be a chance to play against the Heat.
“Jarrod Freeman has come into the 13 for tomorrow and we will have a look at the wicket and see what we want to do,” Griffith said.
“We have had a bit of success bringing the extra quick in over in WA, but we have also had success with that spin focus.
“Moods (David Moody) will be in the 13 and it will be him or Jarrod.”
But Griffith said the signing of Freeman would not stop the search for a full replacement for the experienced Botha.
He confirmed the Hurricanes were getting close to signing a spin bowling import, covering the injury to Tymal Mills.
“We are looking at spin in that space, obviously losing Johan hurts our spin a little bit.
“Clive (Rose) has had some really good performances and had some inconsistencies as well and Jarrod hasn’t played yet.
“We can’t underestimate how well D’Arcy (Short) has bowled this season and his left arm leg spin has been very good for us.
“We have two options we are looking at, wrist and finger (from the) subcontinent.”
The Hurricanes will be looking to bounce back from their nine-wicket loss against the Sydney Sixers last Wednesday.
The Heat sit second from the bottom of the ladder and fell five runs short against the Melbourne Stars on Sunday.
