The Launceston 25-year-old headed four from the back entering the final 285-metre lap at the Silverdome, but by the final bend entering the last 50 metres he was just sitting behind Hobart veteran Grant Page.
Amid deafening roars, Hanson kicked past Page just metres from the finish that drew a smile from his rival in an enthralling 1609m run.
Hanson, who started 42 seconds behind scratch, had finished in a time of 4:53.23 in what was the second fastest mile run in the event’s six-year history at Launceston.
Page crossed 0.24 seconds later ahead of worlds marathoner Josh Harris in 5:00.20.
Kate Pedley – the only woman off the eight entrants – lead for five of the near six laps from scratch until Page made up the 30-second start.
Alex Zegveld won the junior 800 metres off scratch in 2:32.42 just from backmarker Mitch Butler by 0.40 seconds.
