The Break O’Day Council is trailing Hook, Line, and Sinker collection bins at the St Helens wharf and popular jetties at Georges Bay.
The PVC pipe containers aim to stop fishers throwing their lines, hooks and sinkers into the water.
Break O’Day mayor Mick Tucker said the region was a beautiful, coastal area, and it was the community’s responsibility to do all it could to reduce marine waste ending up in the region’s aquatic environments.
“As the stickers on the containers say, approximately one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals are killed every year by marine waste,” he said.
“They are staggering statistics and we want to do our bit to reduce this.”
The bins will be trialed over summer, and if successful, the council will consider installing them in other popular fishing spots.
Fishers are urged to use the bins responsibly.
The bins are not for general waste.
