Following amendments to the Dog Control Act 2000, Director of Racing John King has approved the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) and Brightside Farm Sanctuary to assess and approve non-racing greyhounds to be un-muzzled in public.
Minister for Racing Elise Archer said it was great news.
“Greyhounds can be wonderful, placid pets, and we believe that every retired greyhound should have the opportunity to go muzzle-free in public, provided they have undergone appropriate medical and behavioural assessments,” she said.
“It’s great news for both current and future greyhound owners and will assist in the industry’s ongoing efforts to have as many greyhounds rehomed as possible,” Ms Archer said.
The criteria for greyhounds to be un-muzzled included leash manners, sociability toward people, prey drive, responses, and a physical overview.
Greyhounds adopted from GAP with a numbered green collar are able to be un-muzzled in public immediately. However, greyhounds without a collar must contact GAP to have one issued.

For greyhounds adopted from Brightside Farm Sanctuary, owners can contact Brightside to receive a numbered orange collar.
The collars will identify greyhounds as having passed the suitability program.
If a greyhound was not adopted from GAP or Brightside, it’s possible to apply to the Director of Racing through the Office of Racing Integrity.
