McSweyn crossed the finish line in a time of 27:50.89 to take out the race from rival Jack Rayner.
McSweyn said he had a lofty goal in his sights, but was proud of his effort.
“I thought if everything went well I could go close to that 27:24, I think it shows Aus records aren’t easy and I was 26 seconds off that, so we will see what 2019 holds,” McSweyn said.
“Once the pace dropped out of the race, it was pretty hard in the headwind, so I tried to run even and hold on.
“I was lucky I had a lot of support around the whole track when the going got tough with about three or four laps left.”
McSweyn was within the lead group from the early stages of the race alongside Jordan Williamsz, Jordan Gusman, Harry Summers, Rayner and Ryan Gregson, before breaking away at the 14-minute mark.
