Somerset resident Kylie Bessell has found greater motivation, confidence and fitness by participating in fun runs, most recently the five kilometer Cadbury Marathon in Hobart.
Health and fitness are key goals in Kylie’s Individual Support Plan with Possability.
In addition to her regular support, she accesses a personal trainer, who supports her to attend the gym, have personal training sessions and eat a healthy diet.
“When I first started (participating in fun runs) it was really hard because I wasn’t fit, but since then I’ve lost a lot of weight, eaten properly and kept on going,” Kylie said.
After participating in the Burnie Ten event, Kylie set her sights on the five kilometer Cadbury Marathon in Hobart in February.
She trained in the lead up to the event and was accompanied on the weekend trip to Hobart by Johanna Wadsworth, a Possability support professional.
When the big day of the run arrived, Johanna was confident that Kylie would do well.
“Kylie is passionate about her fitness and has been for quite some time, she has that streak of competitiveness and she does like to finish what she started,” Johanna said.
Kylie displayed the spirit of this year’s International Day of People with Disability themes; empowerment, inclusiveness and equality, as she ran the five kilometer event.
Ringing the personal best bell after crossing the finish line, Kylie was elated to complete the event.
“It felt amazing, even though I struggled it still felt amazing,” Kylie said.
“It was one of the hardest [runs] I have ever done. You get up the first hill and you think - oh my god I am going to die! But I made it up them and I survived.”
Having achieved a big step in her health and fitness goals, Kylie explained how she kept motivated.
“Keep on going. One foot in front of the other and you will make it. I can do anything, when I put my mind to it.”
