The Hadspen-raised Tour de France star’s big break came on his regular training ride up Poatina hill, when he won a stage of the Tour of Tasmania which ultimately secured him the 2008 title.
The race returned to the same climb with a field of 79 men plus 33 in the inaugural women’s tour tackling the 71.5-kilometre leg.
The popular annual event, which also lists Tour de France winner Cadel Evans among its former champions, began in Launceston on Wednesday and journeyed from George Town to Grindelwald on Thursday.
Saturday’s 70.5km stage is from Ulverstone to Riana before a criterium in Devonport on Sunday.
