The Australian Electric Vehicle Association and Tamar NRM are hosting the Electric Experience at Launceston Showground on Sunday, where people can ride in or drive an electric vehicle.
One of the cars available is a 1992 Subaru Brumby, which Christopher Walkden converted to an electric car in 2012.
Mr Walkden, of Selbourne, is the secretary of the Tasmanian Branch of the Australian Electric Vehicle Association.
The cars available on Sunday are Holden Volt, Mitsubishi Outlander, Tesla models, Nissan Leaf, BMW i3 and two converted vehicles – Mr Walkden’s Brumby and a Daihatsu Handi van.
“The idea is to have mainly private vehicle owners taking rides in vehicles,” Mr Walkden said.
“They will get to see the different cars. We have quite a range of vehicles with second-hand cars and two dealers – Mitsubishi and BMW.”
The event can handle up to 400 rides over three sessions on Sunday.
Electric car ‘try before you buy’ events have been held interstate, but none in Tasmania before now.
“We’ve not had anything similar in the state. We’re hoping to get a few hundred people,” he said.
Electric Experience is at the Inveresk Roundhouse, Launceston Showground.
It opens for registration at 9.30am on Sunday and runs until around 3pm.
Entry is free but register at www.trybooking.com/book/event?eid=419138& for a session so queues can be managed.
