Tim Leary has lived in the area at Cleghorn Avenue at Riverside for eight years and has raised concerns over the management of buses and cars in the street at school pick up and drop off times.
The school plans to build a basketball court in land that used to be a bus turning circle, used by school buses to get in and out of the area, but Mr Leary says the court would exacerbate the problems.
“I have lived in this area for eight years and I see multiple near misses weekly in this street,” he said.
Mr Leary has contacted the school association with his concerns and has presented them with a petition signed by residents in the street, to no avail.
An Education Department spokesperson said the concerns were brought to their attention by Mr Leary, regarding the proposed basketball court for Riverside Primary School.

“Concerns have been raised by a member of the community regarding the safety of the proposed area and the potential impact the court positon may have on the use of the facility outside school hours,” the spokesperson said.
“Representatives from the Department of Education met with Mr Leary yesterday [September 26], together with representatives from the school, to further discuss its location within the school grounds and further consultation will be undertaken before any work begins.”
Mr Leary said his issue was not with the development of the basketball court, but rather its location.
The basketball court was identified by the student committee and school association as a priority and consultation on the proposal was undertaken by the school.
As part of the consultation, a letterbox drop with information regarding the project was conducted in the area.
Mr Leary said he believed the location of the basketball court would cause more issues, having the basketball court located so near the street. In addition, he said the bus turning circle should be reinstated to help address the traffic stress. A government spokesperson said the Minister’s office had been in regular contact with Mr Leary.
“The Education Department is working with Mr Leary and the school to resolve the situation.”
