Australian comedian Hannah Gadsby, who presented the directing for television drama Emmy, managed to be funnier than most of the scripted patter that came before.
Gadsby deadpanned her way through presenting the award, won by Stephen Daldry for The Crown.
"For somebody like me, a nobody from nowhere gets this sweet gig, free suit, new boots just because I don't like men," Gadsby told the crowd.
"That's a joke of course."
Her brief appearance on stage had viewers calling for her to host the event next year.
What Hannah Gadsby said at the Emmys
“Ah this is … this is …this is not normal.
The world has gone a bit crazy.
For somebody like me, a nobody from nowhere, gets this sweet gig. Free suit. New boots.
Just because I don’t like men! It’s just …
That’s a joke, of course, just a joke fellas, calm down, hashtag not all men, but a lot of them.
Um … it is just jokes, but what are jokes these days? We don’t know, nobody knows what jokes are.
Especially men.
Am I right, fellas? That’s why I’m presenting alone.”
