However, the effort was soured by a fall on the finish line which saw the 23-year-old taken to hospital with a dislocated shoulder.
Just two weeks after winning the prestigious Emsley Carr Mile in Birmingham, McSweyn lined up in the Diamond League 5000m final in Belgium and stayed in the main bunch through the first two kilometres.
As the halfway mark approached, a trio of Ethiopian athletes led by teenager Selemon Barega broke the race apart.
Barega then strode away from compatriots Gabros Gebrhiwet and Yomif Kejelcha in the final 250m to take the win in 12:43.02 and set the fourth-fastest time in history.
McSweyn hocked 14 seconds off his personal best time to finish in 13:05.23, which was enough for 12th place in a field of 16.
But he appeared to trip behind Belgium’s Bashir Abdi shortly after crossing the line, and lay on the ground for several minutes after the race.
The fall comes at an unfortunate time for the Tasmanian, who has been preparing to compete in the 3000m at the IAAF Continental Cup in the Czech Republic next weekend.
It is unclear whether the injury is serious enough to keep McSweyn from taking to the starting line.
McSweyn’s previous best effort over 5000m was the 13:19.96 he recorded at the Commonwealth Games earlier this year.
Craig Mottram, who recorded a time of 12:55.76 in 2004, is the only Australian to have completed the 5000m quicker than McSweyn’s new benchmark.
