A search is on to find school ambassadors to celebrate 150 years of public education in the state.
Beaconsfield Primary School principal Sharryn Crothers, who is on the school ambassadors committee, said the ambassador search will form a key part of the 150 years celebrations.
“Ambassadors will visit schools and participate in community events over the celebration period, spreading positive messages of public education to the Tasmanian community,” she said.
The 150-year celebrations will begin in October.
Ambassadors will be a group of former and current public school students “who can share their own stories of courage, aspiration, respect and growth”.
Ms Crothers said anyone could be nominated to be a school ambassador, as long as they attended public school in the state.
“We want to hear from people who are proud of their education and of the opportunities, values and pathways its provided them,” she said.
Ambassadors can be anyone, and it is not restricted to current students or education staff.
Ms Crothers said Tasmanian public education represented diversity and equality so the ambassador search was seeking anyone over the age of 10, from a diverse range of backgrounds.
“This is an opportunity for Tasmanians to promote public education and be proud of their state,” she said.
Education Minister Jeremy Rockliff said the state government was focused on improving public education in Tasmania.
“We have a goal to lead the nation in education and create a job-ready generation of young Tasmanians, because there is no better foundation to build Tasmania’s future on than education,” Mr Rockliff said.
“But we know there is still a lot more to do to ensure every Tasmanian student, no matter where they live, has the best possible opportunities.”
The ambassador search is open and those interested can nominate by filling out the form on the Education Department website.
Nominations close August 26.
