An accomplished doctor and researcher, Dr Aaron De Souza will take up the full-time position after accepting the role in March. 

Dr De Souza is currently a consultant neurologist at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in the United Kingdom.

On Wednesday Mr Ferguson said the process for Dr De Souza’s commencement at LGH was progressing. 

“One of the barriers for the new neurologist has in fact been immigration,” Mr Ferguson said. 

“I am very pleased that recently I received advice that migration has been accepted and the visa is being issued. 

“And we look forward to the new doctor commencing here at Launceston, with his family in the very near future. 

“As soon as a clear date is confirmed, I will be sure to let you know.”

The state’s North and North-West has been without a full-time neurologist since the departure of Dr Kurien Koshy in June last year. 

Dr Koshy resigned after being stationed at the Launceston General Hospital for more than six years.

He previously told The Examiner his cries for help had been ignored by the state government.

The Tasmanian Health Service made written offers to two neurologists for positions at the LGH in November last year. 

Dr De Souza is a qualified neurologist and neurophysiologist, with more than 15 years of experience as a medical practitioner. He previously received a research award from the International League Against Epilepsy.
