Celebrating their 140th anniversary, the Country Tigers had a chance to win the game after the siren but best-on-ground Josh Frankcombe could only manage a point from a tough angle to secure a 9.11 (65) to 10.5 (65) result.
The home side brought great pressure from the opening bounce and took a one-goal lead into the first change and led at both half-time and three-quarter time breaks.
Longford’s forward line was led by Tom Garwood, who kicked three goals to match Bulldogs coach Leigh Harding’s tally, while coach Beau Thorp won plenty of the ball.
Thorp said he was pleased with how far his side had come in nine rounds after South won the corresponding round one fixture by 65 points.
Premiership forward Jade Child was dangerous while Aaron Viney impressed in his first game back.

BRIDGENORTH jumped into second spot on the ladder with a 22.20 (152) to 11.8 (74) home win over Deloraine.
The Parrots let through eight last-term goals last round but made no such mistake against the Kangaroos, kicking eight of their own to blow the margin out from 38 points at three-quarter time.
Jack Rowlands more than doubled his season tally by kicking five goals in a group of 12 individual goalkickers, while Dylan Jones led the way with three for the Kangaroos.
Casey Walker-Russell, Nick McElwee and Zach Griffiths all won plenty of ball around the ground for the winners.
A menacing third-quarter display helped get SCOTTSDALE’s season back on track as the Magpies downed Bracknell 11.15 (81) to 8.4 (52).
Led by Neil Oliver and Daniel Roozendaal, the Magpies kicked 5.6 to nothing in the premiership quarter to blow Bracknell out of the water and register just their third win of the season.
Jake Huett and Richard Howe (two goals) were Bracknell’s best performers.
Adam Etchell played his best game for the year as ROCHERLEA climbed back into the top five.
The Suburban Tigers’ 11.18 (84) to 4.4 (28) drubbing of George Town was set up by a clinical first half where the Saints were kept to just two points as Etchell and Brayden Claridge ran amok.
Marking forward Ben Elmer kicked three goals in another strong display while Andrew Cox-Goodyer and Corey Anderson nabbed two each.
The Saints were soundly beaten but managed to win the final term with three goals to two.
