It has been four years since the state’s largest amateur football body was part of the intrastate roster but senior and under-18 NTFA squads have been unveiled for July 14’s encounters with the Southern Football League.
Senior coach Viney, a four-time South Launceston and Rocherlea premiership player, said his 30-man group was handpicked to suit a smallish North Hobart Oval.
“We’ve got a great mix of youth and experience with six guys from division 2. The SFL have got a few tall forwards named in their squad so we’ve named a few key bigs in Rory Mansell, Joel Mountney, Jake Huett and Josh Moore who can all go back if needed,” he said.
“Most of the midfielders we’ve picked can go forward and be dangerous like Leigh Harding, Allan O’Sign, Jordan Tepper and you’ve got Ben Elmer down there who kicked another seven goals on the weekend and is the best div 1 forward at the moment.
“It’s a tight ground so we need to get the upper hand in the midfield through Daniel Roozendaal and centre clearances, and then deep into our forward line.”
Viney said injured division 1 stars such as Jake Cox and South Launceston captain Luke Mccarty were unlucky to miss out on selection and that the buy in from players in general was positive.
The squads start a six-week training block next Wednesday before final selection and jumper presentations on July 12.
“We don’t interfere with club footy too much and we realise that is the number one focus for these players,” Viney said.
The under-18s will be coached by former Longford boss Roydon Peters.
