Peter and Claire Blackwood were thrilled with the result, showing their stock side by side for judge Leigh Ellis.
The Evandale stud was formed by the Blackwoods 12 years ago from an older established stud and the couple has been making headlines with their stock since.
“We’ve been performance recording since conception,” Mr Blackwood said.
“We’ve been selecting genetics from all over Australia and New Zealand to better our sheep and we’re very focused on the production of Corriedale sheep,” he said.
As a stud owner Mr Blackwood said he looked for good production, lambing percentages, carcass traits and wool quality in his stock.
Campbell Town Show’s 2018 supreme champion ram was sired from the New Zealand ram that was twice champion at the Canterbury show in New Zealand.
“It was some of the last semen that came into Australia from New Zealand and we’re lucky that it’s bred very well for us,” he said.
“We used him as a ram lamb last year, so he’s got progeny on the ground and we’re very happy with the progeny he’s thrown.
“We’re pretty happy with the way he’s turning out as an older ram.”
Corriedale competition judge Leigh Ellis said the senior ram had the true characteristics he looked for in this breed, but the junior ram and ewe also exhibited strong traits.
“It is interesting when junior and senior champions come up against one another, because it’s not necessarily fair to discount the junior champion just because he’s that bit younger,” Mr Ellis said.
“The junior champion ram does show a lot of promise. I think he’ll certainly be one to watch.”
The Blackwoods also showed a Corriedale ewe at Campbell Town Show, which also impressed Mr Ellis.
“It’s an interesting comparison to have the junior ewe, who was born in September so she still has some growing to do, compared to the older ram,” he said.
“They are both very good examples of the Corriedale breed, but the ram with his quite high fleece and his overall structure and true Corriedale traits wins over the ewe on the day. It will be interesting to see how she grows over the next 12 months.”
